Production of the Animation

Jan 6th - We started with a recap activity with clay, making models in short amount of time. In production values I have a lot to work on, but nothing I can't do in a short time. I mainly need to work on the models and backgrounds, props will be considered after all of this work has been made. I will be making models before and during the lesson in preparation.

Jan 13th - Not much progress made this lesson.

Jan 10th - I haven't gotten that much done in terms of animation in the end.

Jan 27th - Got my backgrounds and some models done, the backgrounds were printed and my models were drawn and cut by myself.

3rd Feb - Got more models finished, almost at the stage to do animating and audio producing.

10th Feb - I animated for the first time and finalised some models. I have a few seconds of animation done, setting up the scene and story for t.

17th Feb - I did not get much done...

24th Feb - Sorted out the audio for my animation, got clips of knife sounds as well as screams and impact noises.

3rd March - Got in gear and added 17 seconds of animation to the sequence, as a result the project is nearly done (with animating anyhow).

I placed the eye seen in this shot on top of the closed one drawn on, it seems as if the eye has opened before it disappears again once it closes.

The knife was placed a lot closer to the camera than the face, in order for it to have more of an intimidating effect, and show the knife's threat.

The shadow before the face is the blood shedding from the body, shown to be a reflection so then it's an indication not a direct shown image of blood. However it still adds to the tension of the scene and also consistently keeps the drama.

A close up shot of the knife gives the same effect on the blade as before, giving it the illusion of impending doom. The knife (now covered in blood), now shows the result of it's insertion to the victim's body, the cold metal steel now stained by blood.

The shaky camera effect at this scene is to show the effect of the adrenaline and shock of the moment, being stabbed repeatedly dizzies the character accordingly.

10th March - Implemented audio to some parts, have a general idea of what sounds will be played and at what point in the animation.

17th March - I was absent to this lesson unfortunately.

24th March - Added some audio to the animation made sure that there is ambient music to follow the scene and story of the clip. You can see below that I've been adding sound effect, music and I have the video alongside to go by.

Evaluation

I feel that the production went well, I produced a title sequence starting a bit of a story, giving a bit of history to what's going on, I have also made the animation, using drawings and cut-outs, the clip is now finished and I feel that not much has to be made to improved. The only thing I'd probably improve would be the variation of shots, since most of them are close-up, however since it's close up it makes it tense and fits the genre the clip fits under.

Many skills can be learnt from this project, I feel that using new software was tricky at first. You can't ever anticipate what it will be like, all the settings and commands and the purpose of the software, but soon I got the grips of software like Audition, iMovie and Premiere.

Time research wasn't that difficult, I simply researched traits from characters already daunting and eerie and implemented them into my animation. This goes the same for idea generations for that time, I feel all I needed to generate was simply the background and environment of where the characters were going to be in, which I did, a dark gloomy room.

Proposal writing wasn't too difficult, I simply considered everything that needed to be considered when proposing an animation idea, and noted it down, including materials, copyright and plot summary.

Planning was a process that took longer than expected, I took everything into account and planned my models (drawings and cut-outs), the backgrounds, the music, the sound effect and the titles. I feel they were all planned effectively and were implemented fine, they all work as they should.

When it came to key stages of development, I must admit I was very behind, I was still planning my drawings and we were weeks into production. So one day I decided to step up my game and actually get to animating, I only got three seconds done but it was a start.

When we had the next session I upped the ante and got twenty seconds done in that one lesson, using everything I had at my disposal, then the animation was done and I had to add audio. Adding audio was a lot easier than animating, and I found that it was done in no time, the same can be said when I had to add titles to the sequence.

The sequence I think plays out well, the beginning shows how one of the siblings has changed, and the memories that she holds dear are now nothing anymore, all gone. The scene were she stabs her brother is implied, since nothing is really shown, but I feel that the message comes across well. The delusion of the older sibling is present and there's clearly something else going on in the back-story of the sequence.

I feel the sound effects were good, the echo effect on some of the sounds (laughter, grunts) makes the atmosphere they're in more believable as a setting.

The ending, with the laughter and the knife dropping, shows that the older sibling has hit an all-time low and can't possibly recover from what she's done. She's not one to go back on what she's done, her brother is gone, but she didn't what she "had to do" in her own delusional mind.

Overall I feel that if I were to do anything different, it would probably be the story, I could use the same models. Maybe though if I were to edit how they were to react to the story that would then be tweaked, it could be more realistic.

Compared to professionals in the animation industry, I'm pretty sure that my stuff does not compare to that sort of content. In terms of actual animation, it's very sub-par what I've made, but I feel that I have potential, it could be a lot, lot worse.

My plot is very simple compared to better producers, also I feel that if I brush up some techniques and some methods for animation then I'll progress in animations overall. By watching more professional content I can come to the conclusion that they'll be useful for inspiration.

But as an animation that is intended to be fictional I feel it does the job pretty well in my opinion, I feel it went great and I learned a lot through it all.

The feedback is located below in the comment section saying how they thought it was.

Change of Plans

I've decided to change the plot and general idea of my plot for my animation, and I will be taking a different approach to the story.

Saturday, 16 May 2015

Planning it out

This is from a cut-out animation I made using the program of istopmotion, I used cut out animation techniques, using images from  magazines and placing them in front of a camera. Then by taking photos between each second and moving the image around when necessary, I made a animation.

Planning

Planning out sound, backgrounds, materials, props, equipment and models.

Setting

The setting will be derived from the show, the same fictional rural village of Hinamizawa.

The setting is very enclosed and tense, it had to look insignificant but intimidating, like a threat that shows itself later on, waiting amidst the darkness.

Materials

I will need paper, pencils, software to take pictures to animate, an eraser, I will manipulate drawings to make the illusion of animation. Using stop motion animation and using the software of istopmotion, I will use my drawings as cut-outs to animate.

An example of this is the animation I made above, which is also cut-out animation and was the same process.

Backgrounds

I plan to use background from the show itself, placing them behind the characters, I will use some of the external areas featured in the show to keep the authenticity.

Props

I cannot think of anything to use as a prop, I cannot list anything that comes to mind.

Sound

I will use some sounds and clips from the show, taking snippets from random episodes and placing them where they will be effective and purposeful.

Models

I will be using the drawings I make for the animation, drawing separate limbs and to combine them. I can then move all of the limbs separately and give a better sense of movement, and I won't have to start another drawing.

Equipment

I am to use pencils, pens, erasers, paper, and backgrounds on paper, that is all I need to start animating.

Why was it Chosen?

The reason I chose this was because I really wanted to see the possible outcomes of the arts award, what with it teaching you a lot of things that benefit your future.

I also chose animation because I've always been interested in it, I find it captivating, entrancing and there's some really talented shows and pieces of work out there. I've always adored animation, and that alone made me want to attempt this, what with me never having done it before.

Pixilation Animation

This is an animation that we made using a method called Pixilation animation, which is made by taking multiple photos and making slight movements in each to simulate the illusion of movement itself.

After taking the movements and pictures, we reversed the order and it made the video longer, and it made the video longer, It makes the video flow smoother.

Supervised Arts Leadership

In this project the idea is to create posters that are fitting under the genre of films and world war and military accessories.

In this project I am going to be making one of these posters myself, two friends and I are making a poster each, and we will compare them and see which is the best to show the content. They also will be looked at and analysed under what they show, and how they show it.

Idea

Mind map - We made a mind map consisting of the words "Tony Stark (Marvel Character), Military personnel, Vehicles, Title: World War" This title was a working title that changed during development for the best.

Brainstorm - We brainstormed for a good few minutes as to how we would do this and what theme we would go for, but we settled on the same idea pretty quick which gave us an edge when it came to making it, we had a lot of time.

Keep referring to others - I have done throughout most of the development stage, and also mentioned them when setting up our project and defining what we're doing.

Team work (no duplicating images) - I can assure no images are duplicated through our blogs and they're all unique, especially the posters we planned to make ourselves.

Producing work - We produced the work with relatively a good amount of success, I feel it came out great and the work my team made was really, really great in the end.

Feedback from team people and tutor - The feedback we received from the team was generally positive, helping each other out when we could. From our tutor the feedback was also really helpful, and there weren't many issues to tackle.

Finished product - Digital poster, our digital posters were pulled off really well and there were little problems when developing them, the finished product is below. We also put the posters on padlet and got great feedback and it looked really high quality.

Review of how well carrying out leadership - I feel I carried out my role of leadership was really put to the test as I had to develop my own poster to a theme of war (supporting war to be exact). This wasn't easy, but I feel it was pulled off pretty well, considering I didn't come across many obstacles and if I did my team helped sort them out and tackle them with ease. I feel that I did my work to my actual best and I couldn't ask for anything more out of my work, I would definitely do this again but with a more difficult approach and challenge.

What do the others need to do for their leadership to meet their part of the project? - Apart from me, others have work to do too, this includes Angus, Aaron and Sadiq. Angus needs to make an Anti-War poster which will be the opposite of mine, Aaron needs to make a Pro-war poster, supporting it like mine, finally Sadiq needs to do the same as Angus and make an Anti-war poster.

Since we'll have two posters for and against war, we have a fair balance between the two sides, we must make them individually and help out each other when need be,

What is required for this area of leadership? - The poster will have the title of 'World War', and will feature the fictional marvel character of 'Tony Stark'. It will also contain military tech, military people, and the results of what warfare causes, this includes: gun-fights, anger, explosions, exploitation, betrayal and espionage.

I'm going to have to be flexible to situations, I will have to work under pressure and get a satisfying payoff as a result it means I can then take on more difficult tasks with confidence, I also  and also will have to be able to manage my time accordingly. If I do not plan ahead then things will pile up and I will struggle to achieve what I set out to do. I need to work with my team and coordinate with them too, my teams consists of me, Aaron Stringer, Angus Mackintosh and Sadiq Arshad.

My skills to develop will consist of time management, independent work and working with others and sharing feedback and exchanging opinions to better our work. My leadership itself is making a poster and sharing it to a community including friends and family to gather a response.

Hopefully this will improve my artistic judgement and also my editing skills and techniques, also will let me understand sharing work and learning from mistakes that may or may not have been made.

Planning

Action Planning

How to make it happen - To make it happen I need to produce a poster that shows the topic of war, including the figures that lead factions and claim they are helping. I will also be letting family and friends look at it and I will share it on social sites such as Facebook.

Where will it be shared? - The work that I am producing (the poster) will be shared to my friends interested in arts, and my family as they support what I make and do. I will take in their opinions and then work upon them and see if there is anything to improve it on.

Key dates - Starting on 21st April, ending on the 22nd May.

Resources - I will need the sites under google images in the search when I look up 'war', 'warfare' and 'weaponry'. There aren't many other resources to name, in fact I am just using a computer entirely, to find images, and produce my poster and new image entirely.

Software and Hardware - For software I will be using Adobe Photoshop CS6, the software used to make images and posters flawlessly and effectively. I will be using this program only for this poster, nothing else when it comes to software.

For hardware I will simply need a pc that can runs Photoshop CS6, which if anything these ones can, and mine at home can (I also own the software at home, CS6 also).

Assets and File Management - We are going to make a gmail account, simply by having details of the address and password known between us all. From there we can send all files and work we do to that address so we can all access them if anyone ends up absent.

Angus' Planning - http://angusjoesphmackintosh.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/in-my-silver-arts-award-im-going-to-do.html

Aaron's Planning - http://stringeraaron67.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/supervised-arts-leadership.html

Sadiq's Planning -

Production
I started production of my poster to promote war, using the key factors to include in the picture, i have asked for feedback from my peers and I will note what they have to say about them.

Shot 1

This is the first shot I have, it contains the fictional marvel character Tony Stark, I used an effect in the filer galley which gives it a black and white chalk-sketch look. Angus and Aaron think it looks fine and effective for the message I am putting across.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - My skills are yet to develop, however I made the filter and gradient work so it's a sign of progress somewhat, no issues as of now.

Shot 2

This is the second shot I have, I added silhouettes of some marines by the side hanging around, the pose is interesting and relatable, I also put a gradient over it making it fade into the background of white, and I also noticed that it makes it look very dramatic.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - My skills as a whole I feel are slightly improving, by having those soldier fade out it makes the sense of drama and impact to the scene I am trying to convey.

Shot 3

This is the third shot I have, I added some more silhouettes of some jets, this adds some more drama to the picture and gives you a sense of power and authority. This also makes it look more heroic if you support this idea of pro-war.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - At this point I am starting to get a feel for it, I'm starting to consider what to add and make it more out there and effective for the purpose I set it out to make. I feel my skills are definitely getting better, more solid, more of an impact on the picture.

Shot 4

This is the fourth shot I have, I added some text, saying "Help him save you...", I find it's inspirational and it works with the spirit of 'morale'. It's one of the ways to show confidence in war and makes it work with it's surrounding images.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - My skills didn't exactly improve in a sense because text isn't too hard to add and manipulate, but I feel my skills will develop further soon.

Shot 5

This is the fifth shot I have, I added some copies of the text I added in the previous shot, it gives it a more dramatic feel and makes it more impactful.

At this point I think that adding some text made the picture more dramatic, to gain that 'supportive' feel to it as well. A sense of morale is there in the picture.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - I feel my skills in making an atmospheric picture are present, and solid at that, I feel I can capture an emotion in a picture effectively.

Shot 6

This is the sixth shot I have, I added shadows of many types of guns in the background of the poster. In addition to looking downright amazing in contrast, it just follows the theme of war so much more effectively and really gives you the sense of impending warfare and preparation.

The addition of guns in the background was something I added at that point when it was ongoing, to give it the classical and obvious sense to the picture. It just reflects well with the silhouettes in my opinion.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - At this point I feel it's all coming together, I think my skills as a whole are spiking, towering and piling up when it comes to making this picture. I feel there are little issues whatsoever.

Shot 7

This is the seventh shot I have, the final touch I added to my picture was adding some bullet holes to the foreground. This is to demonstrate that guns are going to fire, bullets are going to impact, and the fight is going to start soon...

I've opened up more to variety, know what would work with certain tones and what wouldn't, so I feel my skills have escalated in quality so far.

How my leadership skills are developing with this project - I feel my skills have developed drastically when doing this, I've gained a sense of perspective for the picture, and I have used some new filters, and techniques thanks to Angus and Aaron and also the internet online Photoshop community.

Evidence of Communication

This is proof that I have communicated with Aaron and have sent him links to my blog posts.

This is proof that I have communicated with Angus and have received a link to our padlet post.

Review

This is the padlet document with all of our posters and comments responding to what people think of our work. There's many positive comments so I feel we did a great job in the work and we should consider doing this again. What's more is we worked as a solid group and got all of our work done and published at around the same time.

The feedback from the padlet document has allowed me to review all of our work and conclude we did a very good job. We all carried a very similar style to our work, and I think it was pulled off really, really well.

We also showed what we thought of when we though of what a war poster looked like, we could express ourselves, and the feedback was very positive so we must have done a great job on it!

By working with others, I have learned that we could give each other ideas and opinions on what would make each and every one of our works better or worse in comparison. I also learnt that with others to work with, we shared similar results and we could help each other better ourselves with our work and make a better piece of work.

Personally I feel that my project came along very well actually, there was slight development issues, I made a prototype of my first poster then I scrapped it too late.

A result of this was that I ended up at a set-back, however, I worked hard and consistently, and now I have a poster that I (in my opinion) is really good, and it gets across the image that I was trying to get across.

My plan all pieced together and I can't say that anything went wrong other than that, everything came together in one and I made a really effective, detailed and interesting poster.

My skills developed gradually, of course things took their time to get moving, but soon enough I was beginning to understand what I could do with and without thanks to my group's feedback.

I began to realise that some things are easier than others, like using certain tools on Photoshop can cut tremendous time off of your work and give the same result. I also think that due to my work being critiqued, I began to critique

more effectively.

The overall achievements made would consist of making the posters, we all got ours done and put onto the padlet document to show others, we had to also show them to others and get feedback, so in the end we got some good feedback and I cannot complain with that result, which I would also count as a success.

The only challenge I had was some communication and when thinking of what to add to the project, it became difficult, even with friendly suggestions by others, what to actually put into the picture/poster.

What would you do differently next time? - What I would do differently is probably make us have different categories of posters, so we can vary them up more and get more varied feedback and responses. I would also have a different group of people so we could compare and see which combination of people worked best out of the two groups I would take part in.

What I need to plan for my animation challenge

I need to learn new animation and drawing techniques to make it more varied and unique as opposed to my other one. I will keep the same style, but edit it in a few ways here and there to find out whether or not it works or not. When it comes to animating I can decide whether or not it is suitable and if it's actually needed and may need to be changed.

Sites that contain tips and tricks for art is where I will find these types of techniques and varying art styles.

A few examples are here:

http://www.filmeducation.org/resources/primary/teaching_with_film/primary_animation/animation_techniques/ - Animation styles and their requirements and procedures. Contains images of each animation style, so it's basically good to look and see famous examples of these kinds of

http://www.the-flying-animator.com/animation-techniques.html - Similar to the previous link, but groups up more styles into categories. Doesn't contain as many visual references as the others, but still provides a lot of useful information.

http://www.arena-multimedia.com/blog/index.php/animation-techniques/ - Summarising animation in general, and emphasising how creativity has no limits. Contains videos of examples of each type of naimation which is good as a reference.

I will also produce some exercises using different animation techniques, such as cut-out animation and pixilation animation.

Examples of Animation

This is an example of animation, a fight scene from an anime named Higurashi when they cry, which belongs to Manga Uk and it's original creator.

This is a video made using valve's animation tool source film maker by Crash Maul on Youtube.

This is a video on Youtube of two fictional characters which belong to comic book creator Steve Purcell. Most likely animated in Flash.

This is a video on Youtube, mead by Rooster Teeth on Youtube using motion capture and animation tools, based off of another product.

This is a video on Youtube, an anime of Soul Eater, this fight scene also belongs to Manga Uk and it's original creator.

This is an animation that features in a film by Monty Python and it's in the film The Meaning of Life which is a film they've made years ago, the style looks similar to cut out animation, which is what I plan to do.

Arts Challenge

The session that I enjoyed was the animation one, I enjoyed it because it gave us variety and a chance to take advantage of being creative on the spot. Working in groups to create a new story was imaginative and enjoyable, however for this I will be going solo on this.

The strengths I have in animation is understanding how to animate, how to use the software for capturing each frame, drawing to a relatively good degree, and having an interest in characteristics, emotions and actions that characters have in certain environments and situations.

South Park is an example of cut-out animation, originally used by paper and craft items, now made with computer animation tools, but in the same style making the characters animate as if they are cut-outs.

What I want to learn from my Arts Award Challenge

Skills-wise, I want to develop a few skills, such as how to animate in the 'cut-out' style of animation, how to take advantage of techniques used for animating certain actions and responses. Also I want to develop skills such as time management when given a certain amount of time to comply and draw what is needed for the animation's final cut.

I will show development of my challenge by showing clips, drawings, screenshots, and other forms of evidence to prove that my project is changing, broadening, and most importantly, developing.

I want to learn new techniques for animations and to achieve an actual cut-out animation itself. And I also want to achieve the style of a cut-out animation by the end of it all.

Opportunities

How do you begin finding work in your chosen area?

Editing is a difficult job, one of the ways to begin finding work in this chosen area is to use the cheapest software possible and work your way up from there. For example, Windows Movie Maker, is one of the cheapest programs for editing, it's quality is debatable however.

Firstly, edit for fun, including voice over work or dubbing, maybe even compiling clips together if you prefer the video route of editing. Finding work in this area is difficult because of the scarce amount of people employing editors. Of course there's also editing in publishing, such as checking spelling and grammar or organising the layout of a magazine article.

http://creativeskillset.org/job_roles_and_stories/job_roles/3085_assistant_editor

This is one of the results I have found, an example of where you can find work in being an assistant editor

What education and qualification do you need?

In the link above, the qualifications are listed.

What other qualities as a person would you need to succeed in this area?

This is a list of qualities needed for the job, it's also found in the link above that I've put in the blog.

What kind of careers, pathways and opportunities are available in this area of media?

Editors can range from many things, some options here are video editing, compiling video and making them snap together to create a film or show (out of shots taken by the recording crew).

After a job in editing you could go as an editor to become a camera operator because you'll have a grasp of the films as a whole.

Michael Moore is an example, he was a journalist, he then went onto TV, made some award-winning documentaries, he was a writer and he made the special FX for Star Wars as well.

After that he grew in popularity, due to the fact that Star Wars was well known for it's FX and it's visuals, he's gone on to be a very successful writer as well.
